Erdem, the eponymous London-based ready-to-wear line, established in 2005 by Erdem Moralioglu has won applause for its now-signature modern and unabashedly feminine designs. The brand utilizes a blend of skilled craftsmanship with romanticism and bold custom-designed prints.
“He could almost be called the Christian Lacroix of London,” writes Sarah Mower, contributing editor at American Vogue who previously noted, “[Erdem is] an exceptional talent whose self-taught standards of workmanship almost put his creations on an equal footing with some of the things seen in haute couture.”
Erdem Moralioglu was born and raised in Montreal, Canada by his Turkish father and English mother. He moved to London to attend the Royal College of Art where he received his master’s degree in 2003. Upon graduation, Erdem moved to New York to work in the design studios of Diane von Furstenberg before relocating to London to launch his eponymous label in 2005 after noticing a niche on the London fashion scene for clothes that boasted a new, graceful femininity.
Always with a sense of avant-garde at the fore, Erdem’s designs are realized through clever use of bold colour, print, and a playful approach to embellishment; his handling of embroidery and lace oozes a youthful charm. Erdem has also reaped the benefits of working with the highest quality materials, using some of the finest fabric mills in Europe.
Since launching, Erdem has received a series of accolades including the 2007 Swarovski British Fashion Council Fashion Enterprise Award, followed by the BFC’s Fashion Forward award in 2008 from the British Fashion Council. In 2009, Elle Magazine awarded Erdem the Fashion Future Award at the Elle Style awards in London, while his AW09 show was short listed on style.com as one of the top 10 shows of the season. In early 2010, Erdem was awarded the inaugural British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Award, led by prestigious industry opinion formers, which offers priceless business mentoring.
Erdem’s signature aesthetic has contributed to the brand’s commercial success, now available in the most exclusive department and specialty stores. Erdem is currently stocked in over 90 stores worldwide including Barney’s New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Colette, Dover Street Market, Ikram and Harvey Nichols, in addition to an online presence at net-a-porter.com.
Erdem continues to attract a strong following, with his designs regularly appearing on red carpets the world over courtesy of a host of high profile supporters such as Kate Bosworth, Kiera Knightly, Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, Anne Hathaway, Ashley Olsen, Thandie Newton, and Jessica Biel. Just five years since launching, Erdem has grown to become one of London Fashion Week’s hottest show tickets, and subsequently a globally recognized, critically acclaimed brand.
